Thirdline PBX IP Trunk Configuration

Thirdlane IP-PBX is complete business communications platform with a feature rich Multi Tenant IP PBX at its core. It addresses the needs of Internet Telephony Service Providers and other companies that need to provide multiple virtual PBXs (usually for different companies or departments) and manage them through a single web interface. This article guides you on how to configure this PBX for making and receiving calls over the internet through a next generation carrier like Telnyx!

You'll need to have created an IP based connection on your Telnyx Mission Control Portal account, assigned this connection to a DID and outbound profile in order to make and receive outbound calls. In this example, we'll be using IP authentication as our server has a public IP address.

Thirdlane PBX Prerequisites

  1. Download - You can download a trial version from here. You can burn this ISO to a CD or use a USB installer in order to install this PBX on your server.
  2. Installation - You can view the installation guide here.
  3. Configure Your Telnyx Mission Control Portal

Once you've configured your Telnyx account, you can now proceed to setup Thirdlane PBX following the guide below.

Thirdlane PBX IP Trunk Setup Guide

Step 1: Operating System Setup

Your trunk configuration is ready to go on our side! We can move forward with the configurations on your Thirdlane PBX:

  1. Choose your timezone.


  1. Set your roots password.


  1. Packages will now be installed.


  1. This can take between 5-10 minutes.


  1. Other services will now be configured and can take approximately 20 minutes. Once it's finished you'll see the below and be prompted to login with the password you set in step 2.


  1. You'll now be prompted to configure your network settings. This will differ depending on the individuals case.


  1. Once you are finished - Save & Quit the configuration and the server will automatically reboot as seen below.


  1. At this point, you'll now be provided with an http url on the interface. You'll use this url in your browser in order to now configure the trunks in the graphical user interface. You'll be brought to the below image and you can then enter in root as the username and the password you set in step 2.


Step 2: Login as tenant

With the free trial version, a sample tenant will already be created once you login. You should automatically be logged in as the sample tenant. If you are not, you can select the login via the top right of the interface as seen below.


Step 3: Adding DIDs

In order to receive inbound calls, you'll need to add DID's to the PBX.

  1. Select DIDs under the System Management dropdown on the left pane. These DIDs will be the one's you purchased from your Telnyx Mission Control Portal account. The image below shows +17732490303, a number purchased from Telnyx as an example.


  1. Click the checkbox beside the number and then select Assign Selected as seen in the screenshot below. This will assign the DID to the current tenant and will make it accessible to be assigned to an extension.


  1. You'll see that there is a column called Used in Inbound Routes and has a checkbox below it. The box isn't checked and so this means that the DID isn't currently setup to receive inbound calls. We'll now look assign an extension to this DID and then create the inbound route.

Step 4: Setup Extensions

  1. On the left pane, navigate to Selected Tenant Management and expand the dropdown.
  2. You'll see another dropdown called Extensions and Contacts. Click this dropdown and select User Extensions.

    This is where you can view and create all your extensions and associate these extensions with your DIDs you've loaded from the previous step above.


  1. Once you are in the Users Extensions section, we will being to create your extensions as seen above.
  2. You will be presented with a window like below where you'll enter in the first name, last name and extension number this person will have.
  3. Click Save when you are finished.


  1. There should now be an extension created in your extensions section.


  1. Double click the extension to open the extension settings again.
  2. Navigate to the Phone sub tab in order to retrieve the extensions username and password. These details along with the IP address of your server can now be used by other clients to register to the PBX. These devices will need to be registered so they can receive the inbound calls to the DIDs associated to the extensions. thirdlane

  3. If you were to go back to the DID's section now, you'll see the checkbox is enabled and the DID is now associated to extension 101.


Step 5: Inbound Routes

  1. On the left pane, navigate to Selected Tenant Management and expand the dropdown.
  2. Click on another dropdown called Call Routing.
  3. Select Inbound routes. This is where you'll specify the route to take and other conditions that you want to happen when someone dials your DID.


  1. Select Time Based Routes Group.
  2. Then select Add Route.
  3. Enter the details similar to the below.
  4. Press Save when you are finished.


At this point, inbound calling to your DID is now ready to go! Simply ensure you register your client to your PBX with the extensions username and password. The domain will be the public IP of your PBX server.

Step 6: Inbound Routes

  1. The trunks section located under the System Management dropdown allows you to specify the SIP providers details which your PBX will communicate with.


  1. Select the Create SIP Trunk option and proceed to enter the details from the below image.
  2. Click save when you are finished.


  1. Create the outbound route. By default, there are certain outbound route patterns created already.


  1. For this example, we are editing the pattern _1NXXNXXXXXX and associating it with the above Telnyx trunk we created.
  2. Click save when you are finished.


That's it, you've now completed the configuration of your Thirdlane IP-PBX and can now make and receive calls by using Telnyx as the SIP provider.
